Which country sells us the most expensive fruit? From Belgium, at a record price. But Greece and Ecuador hold the market

Fruit imports for 2025 show a stark contrast between the extreme price per kilogram and the reality of the mass market. According to foreign trade data from INSTAT, the most expensive fruits per kilogram were imported from Belgium, at around 2,319 lek/kg. It is followed by the United Kingdom with 2,181 lek/kg, Russia with 2,087 lek/kg, Austria with 2,007 lek/kg and Slovenia with 2,007 lek/kg.
But these are statistical records. Only 3 kilograms were imported from Belgium, 70 kilograms from the United Kingdom and 118 kilograms from Austria. So, these are symbolic quantities, which could be specific products, premium varieties or special shipments. In these conditions, a small invoice divided into a few kilograms artificially increases the average price.
Real market suppliers: low prices, high volume
The real market structure is dominated by countries with large import volumes. Greece leads with over 38 million kilograms, with an average price of around 74 lek/kg. Ecuador and Italy follow with very high volumes and almost the same price level. Colombia and Argentina also move in the range of 75-78 lek/kg.
It is precisely these suppliers who directly influence the final price paid by the consumer. Large imported quantities give them an advantage in negotiation, reduce the cost per kilogram and create stability in trade relations, which translates into more affordable prices in the market.
High-priced segment
There are also countries with relatively limited volume, but with significantly higher prices per kilogram, such as the USA with 417 lek/kg, Spain with 403 lek/kg, Vietnam with 706 lek/kg. In the same segment are also India with 349 lek/kg, Sri Lanka with 331 lek/kg, Indonesia with 312 lek/kg, Romania with 303 lek/kg, France with 236 lek/kg and Jordan with 239 lek/kg. Distance, transport, seasonality and the nature of the products (often tropical or out-of-season fruits) affect this.
So, technically we bought the most expensive fruits from Belgium. But in reality, the price of fruits that are consumed in bulk is determined by Greece, Ecuador, and Italy.
