How did Albania's trade with its "neighbors" change in one year?

Albania has strengthened trade exchanges with countries in the region during 2025, marking significant growth in both volume and value, although with noticeable differences from one country to another.

Serbia remains the largest regional trading partner in terms of imports, reaching 23.1 billion lek, while exports to this country amount to 8.5 billion lek. Compared to a year earlier, exports to Serbia increased by 3.4% in value and 0.3% in volume, while imports recorded a stronger increase of 6.1% in value and 8.8% in weight, reflecting a deepening trade deficit.

Meanwhile, Kosovo stands out for the high level of Albanian exports, which amount to 33.6 billion lek, significantly more than imports of 16.1 billion lek. However, the data show an annual decline in exports in value of 8.6%, despite an increase in volume of 5.6%, which suggests price reductions or a shift towards products with lower unit value.

With North Macedonia, attention is drawn to the strong contraction of exports in value, although in volume they mark a modest increase of 0.7%. Imports from this country, on the other hand, have increased by 16.7% in value, but have fallen by 8% in weight, an indicator of the increase in average prices.

With Montenegro, exports have increased in both value and volume, while imports have marked a strong increase in value but a decrease in volume.

Meanwhile, trade with Bosnia and Herzegovina shows steady growth. In annual terms, exports have increased by 13.1% in value and 19.9% in volume, while imports have recorded even higher growth, respectively 19% in value and 21.2% in weight.

Overall, the data shows that regional trade growth is relying more on volume than value, especially for Albanian exports. This implies pressure on prices, stronger competition and a need for value-added products.
