Albanians consumed twice as much carbonated drinks/ In 7 months, their imports

The latest figures on the import of carbonated drinks show a rapid transformation in the consumption habits of Albanians. “Scan Intel” has obtained figures from “INSTAT” for the import of “waters, including mineral waters and carbonated waters, containing sugar or other added sweetening or flavoring substances, and other non-alcoholic beverages, not including fruit, nut or vegetable juices.” In 2020, about 36.9 thousand tons of sweetened carbonated waters and drinks entered the country, while just four years later, in 2024, the volume reached over 68.3 thousand tons. The increase is almost 85% in a short period of time. Even in the first seven months of 2025, imports have touched 42.4 thousand tons, suggesting that by the end of the year the figure could break another record.

The financial value of this market is also impressive. From 3.6 billion lek imported in 2020, the figure has increased to over 6.8 billion lek in 2024, practically doubling the economic weight of carbonated drinks in just a few years. These figures do not represent just dry trade statistics, but they are a direct indicator of changing lifestyles and the spread of a culture of fast consumption.

Even the figures for seven months speak of around 4 billion lek worth of water imports, including mineral waters and sparkling waters and other carbonated beverages.

This change also raises serious questions about the consequences for public health. Most of these products are loaded with added sugars and additives, which according to international studies are directly linked to the increase in obesity, diabetes and other metabolic problems. In a country where even without this impact, obesity levels are increasing, the increase in consumption of carbonated drinks is expected to further increase the burden on the health system.

The increase in the import of carbonated beverages is not simply an economic issue, but a cultural and social indicator.
