Albania records the largest increase in air traffic in Europe/ Around 160% more commercial flights than before the pandemic
Albania is gaining more and more popularity among foreign tourists, especially after the end of the pandemic. Tourism has become one of the fastest growing sectors in the country and is becoming an important engine for the national economy. One of the main reasons for this development is related to the entry of low-cost airlines, as has happened in other parts of Europe, which has led to a significant increase in the number of flights.
According to Eurostat data, Albania has recorded a very positive performance during August 2025. Compared to the same period before the pandemic, commercial flights have increased by around 160%, ranking the country at the top of Europe and the region.
At the regional level, Albania is followed by Bosnia and Herzegovina with a 64.1% increase in flights, while Serbia has recorded an increase of 32.4%. North Macedonia has recorded a more moderate pace with 6.5%, while Montenegro is presented with an increase of 4.9%. These figures show that Albania is clearly differentiating itself from its neighbors, positioning itself as a fast-growing destination.
At the European level, Albania leads the list for the increase in the number of flights, followed by Iceland with +103%. It is followed by Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia and Cyprus. But not all countries have experienced growth: Latvia has had the most pronounced decline with -30.8%, while Slovenia (-23.8%), Sweden (-21.9%) and Finland (-18.1%) have also recorded a negative balance. This contrast shows that while some countries are still dealing with the consequences of the air transport crisis, Albania is taking advantage of a unique moment to strengthen its position on the European tourist map.
