New tunnel connects Austria with Italy/ Underground road crosses the Alps,

European workers have opened an underground tunnel between Austria and Italy, which will be transformed into a high-speed rail line connecting the north and south of Europe.

The Brenner Base Tunnel, billed as the world's longest underground rail link, is a major European Union project to shift freight transport from roads to rail, with the aim of reducing pollution and increasing cross-border trade.

The final section of the Brenner exploration tunnel collapsed during a ceremony attended by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Austrian Chancellor Christian Stoker.

"It is a historic day for Italy, Austria and all of Europe," Meloni declared during the opening ceremony.

This will be the first dedicated underground rail link directly connecting Austria with Italy. The tunnel is expected to open in 2032, some 16 years late and at a cost of 8.5 billion euros, roughly 2.5 billion more than the original budget.

The structure will be 55 km long and will extend up to 64 km by connecting to an existing tunnel in Innsbruck. It will cut the travel time between Fortezza in Italy and Innsbruck to less than 25 minutes, from 80 minutes currently.

The Brenner Pass is one of the busiest freight routes in the Alps. Every year, over 2.5 million trucks, 14 million vehicles and 50 million tons of goods pass through it, overwhelming local communities.
