Meta introduces smart glasses/ The new model aims to transform the technological devices market
Meta has introduced its newest model of smart glasses, the first to be ready for the consumer and to include an integrated screen.
CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled the new device at the company's annual developer event in California. The model is called the Meta Ray-Ban Display and will go on sale later this month with a starting price of $799. It features a small digital screen on the right lens, for simple tasks like receiving notifications.
"The screen is big enough to watch a video or read a series of messages. It appears in one eye and is slightly off-center, so it doesn't block your view, and it disappears after a few seconds when not in use, so it doesn't create distractions," Zuckerberg explained.
But he has more ambitious plans for the future of smart glasses. According to Zuckerberg, these devices are suitable for interaction with so-called "superintelligence", which exceeds human capabilities.
"Glasses are the ideal form of personal superintelligence because they allow you to stay present in the moment while having access to all these artificial intelligence capabilities that make you smarter, help you communicate better, improve your memory and senses."
Meta has had moderate commercial success with previous versions of its smart glasses, which also received updates during the same event. However, the company is considered to be behind rivals in the race to develop advanced technological systems, compared to OpenAI and Alphabet.
Meta has begun recruiting in earnest to bridge this gap. According to analysts, the company still needs to work on convincing the public that smart glasses are a must-have tool. However, Meta has the potential to capture a large share of the market for these devices.
