Albania leads commercial flights in July/First on the continent with about 152% more than before the pandemic
Tourism in Albania has been gaining more and more attention for years, becoming one of the fastest growing sectors. This fact is clearly reflected in the significant increase in the number of commercial flights, especially after the pandemic period, where this market has experienced an extraordinary expansion. According to the latest data from the European Statistical Agency for the month of July, the number of commercial flights in Albania has increased by 151.7% compared to the pre-pandemic period, ranking our country as the country with the highest increase in flights in all of Europe for the month we left behind.
As for other countries in the region, Albania is followed by Bosnia & Herzegovina with a growth of 64.4%, while Serbia follows with a significant increase of 34.3%. Meanwhile, Montenegro and North Macedonia have recorded lower growth, with 5.4% and 13.5%, respectively. These figures show an increase in interest in air travel in the Balkans, although not uniform across all countries.
In Europe, after Albania, which leads as the country with the highest growth, comes Iceland with a 106.7% increase in commercial flights compared to the same period before the pandemic. Then come Bosnia & Herzegovina and Serbia, in third and fourth place, while in fifth place is Cyprus, a country that is increasingly welcoming visitors during the summer season, thanks to its position as a popular destination for coastal holidays.
However, not all European countries have had the same positive result. Nordic countries have seen a decrease in the number of flights, which is also related to the fact that during the summer months, tourists prefer destinations with a warm climate and beaches. Specifically, among the countries that have suffered the most significant decline are Finland with 20% fewer flights, Slovenia with 22.2%, Sweden with 22.9% and Latvia with 30.7%.
