Heat waves that favor wildfires and overcrowding in traditional destinations are increasingly changing Europeans' travel preferences.

This has been observed since spring, with the increase in off-season holidays and is confirmed in the latest European Travel Commission survey. More than half (55%) of the 6,001 travellers surveyed in 10 countries are looking for less well-known destinations for their trips. Fear of crowded places has risen from seventh to third place in the past year, ranking behind rising travel costs due to inflation (first place) and personal financial situation.

While July and August remain the absolute favorite months for summer vacations, the “September option” is gaining ground. Nearly a fifth of those surveyed (22%) plan a vacation in the month that marks the end of the season and the transition to autumn. This percentage is up compared to last year. “Breathtaking” vacations, which take place in periods with milder weather, have long been discussed, but now this trend seems to be consolidating in travelers’ choices. A preference that is also favored by the better price-quality ratio.

These trends are also being reflected by operators. Presenting its third-quarter results, Tui, the leading European tourism group, noted a significant increase in interest in trips in the autumn or before the Christmas period. According to the group's data, holiday bookings in Germany were down by five percent due to high temperatures, but demand is expected to increase in the autumn.
