“Banking market, with development potential” - Parent banks in Europe: Albania, very profitable. Credit quality has improved
The banking market in Albania holds great potential for development. According to a European Investment Bank survey, 75% of banking groups in Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe consider the potential of the Albanian banking market to be medium and 25% to be high. Most foreign-owned banks in Albania report higher profitability compared to their parent bank, which is a significant improvement compared to the previous period.
The majority of international banking groups reported higher or equal profitability for their operations in Albania compared to their overall group operations. This is a significant improvement compared to the previous round of the survey.
Regarding the demand for credit from Albanian citizens, it has seen a strong increase in the first half of this year, exceeding even the regional average. However, this demand is expected to be less "aggressive" in the second half of 2025. On the other hand, the conditions of the credit offer, which indicate the willingness of banks to grant credit to their customers, have not changed and are expected to remain so, in line with the regional trend.
All loan segments have recorded an improvement, except for foreign currency loans, which remained unchanged.
Regarding non-performing loans, the European Investment Bank states that credit quality has improved over the past six months and is expected to remain unchanged in the future. Most international factors are contributing negatively to credit supply, while among domestic factors, non-performing loan figures and the outlook for banks are contributing positively.
In Albania, access to financing has remained positive and is expected to continue to improve in the next six months.
