Every individual who reaches retirement age and prepares a file for financial benefits will have to wait a certain amount of time from making the request until it is approved and the pension is calculated.
The files are often associated with various documentation generation issues, especially for those individuals who have worked in former state-owned enterprises or former agricultural cooperatives, while the rest of the documents are generated by the Social Institute itself.
But what is the average processing time for pension applications?
While the maximum legal deadline is 45 days, the average time taken by the Social Security Institute is significantly lower and is calculated at 22.8 days.
Divided by regional directorates, Shkodra takes the least time with only 9.9 days to prepare the file and determine the pension amount, and Tirana takes the most time with 30.4 days due to the fact that it has a larger population and the flow of requests is higher.
In less than 20 days, it is also in the regional directorates of Peshkopi, Korça, Kukës, and Vlora.
While the deadline is over 20 days in the regional directorates of Durrës, Elbasan, Fier, Gjirokastër, Lezhë.
Meanwhile, if we refer to the figures for 2024, it turns out that nationwide, over 99.7 percent of new old-age pensions have been concluded ahead of schedule.
It will now be easier to complete files after the government approved legal changes that guarantee the recognition of periods of employment before 1994, for nearly 30,000 individuals, without the need to initiate legal proceedings due to damage to documentation.
The law, which aims to recognize as an insurance period, for pension purposes in the social security system, periods of employment in state institutions, former state enterprises, former agricultural enterprises and former agricultural cooperatives, entered into force in mid-March 2025.
During 2024, 29,232 new old-age pensions were concluded, of which 17,785 are male and 11,447 are female.
