ChatGPT, 2 billion USD in two years - The application generates about 3 dollars

ChatGPT’s phone app has generated $2 billion in consumer spending since its launch in 2023, earning an average of $2.91 per install. This year alone, the app has grossed $1.35 billion, a 673% increase from the January-July period last year. It currently generates about $193 million per month, up from just $25 million in 2024.

This revenue puts ChatGPT well ahead of the competition. According to analytics firm Appfigures, Grok, its closest rival on Apple and Google’s platforms, managed to generate just $25.6 million during the same period. These figures do not represent the total revenue of AI companies, as users and businesses can subscribe through websites, while significant revenue is also generated from the use of APIs, a model similar to the charging for cloud services.

Despite this, it's clear that artificial intelligence is becoming increasingly popular on mobile devices. Appfigures estimates that for each install, ChatGPT generates $2.91 in revenue, trailing Claude at $2.55, Grok at $0.75, and Copilot at just $0.28. As of May 2023, the app has been downloaded an estimated 690 million times globally.

The figures have also sparked controversy, with Elon Musk accusing Apple of favoring OpenAI in the App Store and threatening to sue on behalf of his artificial intelligence company, xAI. Musk claims that Apple's management of app rankings violates antitrust rules.

According to Appfigures data, average monthly downloads for ChatGPT now stand at around 45 million, a 180% expansion compared to the average of 16 million downloads in the period January–July 2024. In total, during this year, the application has been downloaded around 318 million times, compared to 113 million downloads in the same period a year ago.

The app’s incredible success coincides with the launch of its newest model, GPT-5, which OpenAI unveiled last week. CEO Sam Altman described GPT-5 as a “doctorate-level expert in every field” and called it the biggest improvement since ChatGPT launched in November 2022.
