Albania has the youngest population in the EU/Turkey, with the lowest median age in Europe. Italy ranks last.

According to the latest Eurostat data, Albania has a median age of 44.3 years, placing the country slightly below the European Union average, which reached 44.9 years in early 2025. This indicates that half of the EU population is older than 44.9 years, while the other half is younger.
In the region, Montenegro has the youngest population, while North Macedonia has an average age of around 42 years. Meanwhile, Serbia has the highest age at 45.4 years, making it the oldest country in the region. However, the differences between the Balkan countries are not large, indicating a relative stability in the demographic structure.
At EU level, the median age has increased by 2.1 years since 2015, when the average was 42.8 years. This increase was recorded in all EU countries except Germany and Malta. The most pronounced population ageing was observed in Slovakia and Cyprus, where the average increased by 4 years, while Italy, Greece and Poland recorded an increase of 3.8 years each. Portugal also recorded a similar trend.
Among the youngest countries in Europe, Turkey stands out, with an average age of 34.4 years, and Azerbaijan, with 35.1 years. Younger populations are also seen in Iceland and Georgia, creating a clear contrast with the aging countries of Western Europe. On the other hand, Italy remains the country with the oldest population on the continent, with an average age of 49.1 years, and the negative trend is also visible in Portugal, Bulgaria and Turkey.
This aging population has important consequences for the labor market, health systems, and pensions, underlining the need for policies that stimulate fertility and the integration of young people into the economy.
