Albania Loses Ground in the Cryptocurrency Market/ Chainalysis 2025 Report: Ranked 111th out of 151 Countries Worldwide

Chainalysis’ 2025 Crypto Geography Report features an index that measures cryptocurrency adoption in 151 countries around the world. But where does Albania rank? It ranks 111th in the world, according to the 2025 report, up from 109th a year ago. Regionally, Albania ranks last, behind Serbia, which ranks 67th, Bosnia and Herzegovina, which ranks 97th, and Montenegro, which ranks 104th.
This index is based on 4 main pillars and several different indicators, and is weighted by the country's economy. So, the cryptocurrency activity in each of the 151 countries analyzed is weighted by the purchasing power parity per capita of that country, thus giving priority to countries with lower economic development. This means that, if two countries have equal cryptocurrency activity, priority in the ranking, by positioning it higher, is given to the country with a weaker economy.
Countries are ranked by how much they use crypto services, how much money they send/receive, and how important this activity is in relation to the average income of their population (GDP per capita).
Globally, India ranks first, followed by the United States, Pakistan, Vietnam and Brazil.
In Albania, cryptocurrency adoption has been on the rise, especially among young people and businesses seeking faster and more flexible alternatives for payments or investments. However, the lack of legal regulation and institutional control has made this space vulnerable to illicit activities.
The Special Prosecution Office has seized 11 million euros in cryptocurrencies during 2024. The figure was mentioned by SPAK head Altin Dumani during his report to the parliamentary law committee. Dumani requested that legal initiatives be taken to enable a digital wallet for holding the seized cryptocurrencies. Albania does not currently have a digital wallet.
