How many Albanian minors received residence permits in Europe? In total, 147

The latest Eurostat data for 2024 show that Albania continues to be one of the main countries of origin of minors who receive their first residence permits in the European Union. Of the 147,474 residence permits issued to minors from Europe, 13% belong to Albanian citizens, ranking our country in third position, after Ukraine (21%) and Belarus (15%). This positioning places Albania at the center of the European migration map, especially for the movements of children and young people.

In total, 540,445 first residence permits for minors were granted worldwide in 2024, with Europe accounting for a significant share of 27%. These figures show that the continent is adding a large number of minors each year who seek to integrate into the educational and social systems of EU member states. The increase in requests from Albania is mainly related to family reunification, followed by opportunities for education and the prospects of a more stable life in the host countries.

Globally, Asia is the region with the largest number of minors receiving their first residence permits, with 201,039 children representing 37% of the global total. At the top of the list of Asian countries are Syria (31%), Afghanistan (13%), India (11%), China including Hong Kong (8%) and Pakistan (7%). In parallel, Africa accounts for 21% of the global total, with 111,934 minors, a large proportion of whom come from Morocco (36%), Egypt (8%), Nigeria (7%), Somalia (5%) and Eritrea (5%). The data shows that these regions continue to face social challenges, conflicts and economic difficulties that directly affect the migration of young people.

Although the highest global flows come from Asia and Africa, Albania remains one of the most prominent countries within the European continent in terms of child migration. This reality underscores the demographic and socio-economic challenges that the country must address, as more and more Albanian families choose European Union countries for the development and future of their children.
