Record increase in dairy imports in 2025/ For every 1 lek earned from exports,

Data on imports of the group “Dairy products, eggs and honey” for the period 2005-2025 show a continuous and very strong increase in both weight and value. This trend cannot be explained simply by increased consumption or improved standards, but is directly related to the weakening of domestic production of milk and its by-products.

Previously, "Scan Intel" analyzed milk production, which showed that for 2024, a total of about 95 thousand tons of milk were collected in the Albanian territory. Compared to the previous year, this amount has decreased by 6.6%.

In 2005, imports by weight were around 10.8 thousand tons, while in 2025 they will reach 36.8 thousand tons, i.e. more than 3.3 times increase within 20 years. In parallel, imports by value will increase from 1.25 billion lek to 7.74 billion lek, which means an increase of over 6 times.

Compared to 2024, dairy imports have increased in value by about 14%.

In 2025, exports in value for dairy products, eggs and honey are 629 million lek, while imports in value reach 7.7 billion. This means that exports cover only about 8% of imports. In other words, for every 1 lek earned from exports, over 12 lek are spent on imports.

This creates a very deep trade deficit, around 7.1 billion for this group of products alone.

But from which countries do we get supplies for this chapter?

The structure of trading partners for dairy imports shows a high concentration of several key European countries. Italy clearly dominates with 33.4% of total imports, positioning itself as the main supplier to the domestic market. It is followed by Germany with 12.2% and Greece with 9.3%, which, together with Italy, cover over half of total imports. Serbia also has a significant share with 8.8%, the Netherlands with 4.6% and Hungary with 4.0%.
