45% of energy consumption to be produced by sun and wind - MEI publishes

On the International Day of Clean Energy, the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy has published objectives for the expansion of renewable energies and the diversification of electricity production sources. According to this ministry, the strategy aims for 45% of domestic consumption to be produced by photovoltaic and wind technologies by 2030.

This means that within 5 years, solar and wind power plants will need to be built, which will enable the achievement of this ambitious objective.

Currently, electricity production is dominated by hydroelectric power plants with 94%, while 6% is produced by solar power plants that have entered production. Of the total production, about 50% is generated by the generating capacities of the Albanian Electric Power Corporation, while the rest is generated by private companies and concessionaires. However, there are no public figures on the weight of domestic production in consumption, given that a part of the needs are still met by imports.

Meanwhile, there are a number of projects that have been presented and are expected to affect the change in the map of electricity production. The largest is the Tropoja wind power plant with a capacity of 603.9 MW. The investment will be private, while it has not yet been determined what the benefits will be for the state and whether there will be an amount of energy generated that will be purchased at a preferential price. This scheme was followed in the auctions held for the Karavasta and Spitalla photovoltaic power plants, where it was determined that 50% of the energy produced for 15 years is purchased by the state for 15 years at a preferential price.

Meanwhile, according to the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy, there are currently over 700 MW of private photovoltaic capacities installed and in operation, as well as 400 MW of additional self-production capacities. Meanwhile, wind energy is still untapped, as no power plant has entered production.
