Origin of tobacco consumed in Albania/ Poland and Greece top the list, trade also increases with Romania and Germany
The price of cigarettes in Albania has increased continuously in recent years, as a result of fiscal policies aimed at reducing tobacco consumption.
In January 2025, the price of cigarette packs increased by 20 to 30 lek per pack, as a result of the increase in tobacco excise duty. Currently, the most expensive pack of cigarettes on the market is sold at a maximum price of 380 lek.
Compared to other European countries, the price of cigarettes in Albania remains relatively lower. This difference is due to the lower level of excise duty and taxes on tobacco products.
However, data from INSTAT show that the import of this product has been increasing in recent years. In February of this year, the latest period with foreign trade data, tobacco imports reached around 746 million lek.
From which countries does Albania import tobacco?
According to data from February 2025, Poland is the main importer of tobacco for Albania, with an increase of 76.2% from the previous year.
The five main partners supplying Albania with tobacco are: Poland, Greece, Romania, Germany and North Macedonia.
What is noticeable from this data is that Greece and Poland have changed rankings, as in February 2024 Greece held the first place for tobacco imports.
However, both countries were the largest importers of tobacco in Albania even in 2024.
Meanwhile, if we analyze the year 2024 as a whole, the data shows that a record of imports of tobacco and its processed substitutes was recorded with a value of 11.8 billion lek, up from 10.1 in 2023. So, over the course of two decades, a record was recorded for this value. If we talk about the main partners, we again see that Poland, Greece and Romania lead.
