Bank "millionaires", who has the money? Around 137 thousand depositors

In Albanian banks, savings are growing, but with them the gap between depositors is becoming more visible. The Annual Report 2025 of the Deposit Insurance Agency shows that insurable deposits of individuals reached 1.38 trillion lek at the end of the year, with an annual growth of 8.8%. But the main weight of these savings continues to rest with a relatively small group of depositors.

The figures show that individual depositors with more than 2.5 million lek in the bank reached 137,554 and held a total of 819.6 billion lek. On the other hand, 1.78 million depositors with amounts up to the insurance limit of 2.5 million lek owned 567.8 billion lek. Translated into percentages, this means that the group with deposits over 2.5 million lek holds 59% of insurable individual deposits, while the rest 41%. Even the graph of the report for 2025 gives exactly this division: 59% with 41%.

The contrast becomes even stronger when the figures are read on average. A calculation based on the report's data shows that a depositor in the group over 2.5 million lekë has an average of about 5.96 million lekë in the bank, while a depositor in the other group has about 319 thousand lekë. So, on average, depositors in the first group hold almost 19 times more money than the rest.

In the overall picture, the Albanian banking system closed 2025 with 1.84 trillion lek deposits, up 9.1% compared to the previous year. Of these, 1.74 trillion lek were insurable deposits, or 94.9% of the total.
