"The objectives in Iran are nearing completion" - Donald Trump's

US President Donald Trump said his country would "finish the job" in Iran soon, as "major strategic objectives are nearing completion" in his first national address in defense of the war since the conflict began in late February.

At the same time, he said Iran would continue to face a barrage of attacks in the short term. “We’re going to hit them extremely hard over the next two to three weeks,” Trump said. “We’re going to put them back in the Stone Age, where they belong.”

The speech came at a time when Trump faces falling approval ratings, economic concerns and growing diplomatic fallout from the war.

Trump used his platform to reassure war-weary Americans that the offensive was worth it, but he also spent much of the 20-minute speech repeating many things he had already said in recent weeks and providing few new details.

The speech appeared unlikely to change public opinion at a time when polls show many Americans think the US military has gone too far in Iran and while gas and oil prices remain high.

The effect on global financial markets was more immediate, with oil rising more than 4% and Asian stocks falling after Trump's comments that the US would continue to hit Iran hard.

Trump did not mention the possibility of sending US ground troops to Iran, nor did he refer to NATO, the transatlantic alliance against which he has been criticized for not helping secure the critical Strait of Hormuz, where a blockade by Iran has caused energy prices to rise sharply.

He also said nothing about negotiations with Iran, nor did he mention his April 6 deadline for Iran to reopen the waterway or face harsh retaliation from the US.
