Germans buy cheaper fuel in Poland - It costs 0.8 euros per liter less than in

German drivers flocked across the border into Poland on Wednesday in search of cheaper fuel, after prices rose a few cents per liter shortly after noon.

Since Wednesday, gas stations across Germany are legally allowed to raise their prices only at noon. According to the ADAC drivers' association, which is widely regarded as the largest in Europe, fuel prices in Germany have risen sharply since the new law came into effect.

In the Polish border town of Slubice, a German driver reported noticing a price difference of up to 80 cents between German and Polish fuel. Another driver said that fuel in Germany now costs a “small fortune,” making Poland a much more attractive option to fill up.

Both countries are currently facing a significant increase in oil and gas prices, caused by the US-Israeli war against Iran.

The lower house of the German parliament approved initial measures to curb rising fuel prices last Thursday, however, it is still trying to keep government intervention low.

Poland's government has decided to cut VAT and excise duties on fuel, a decision criticized by the Polish Fiscal Council. The measures to lower fuel prices were poorly targeted and costly, raising inflation risks and, if extended until the end of the year, making a budget amendment possible, it said in a statement.
