"Maternities without queues", births fall significantly/ Natural balance turns negative in the first quarter of 2025
Albania recorded a positive natural population growth in 2024, with 1,208 more births than deaths, but this difference has narrowed significantly compared to the previous year. However, the trend for the current year seems worrying. In the first quarter of 2025 alone, births fell by 14.1 percent, while deaths decreased by 5.8 percent, bringing the natural population balance in the Albanian territory to a negative figure of minus 883 people.
The Tirana region continues to hold the highest weight in both births and deaths. During 2024, 9,006 babies were born in the capital, while the number of deaths reached 5,609. In contrast, the Gjirokastra region continues to register the lowest number of births, with only 336 cases last year, and Kukës has the lowest number of deaths with 533 cases.
Although the data for the first quarter of 2025 are still preliminary and under review, the trend is clear, the decline in births is accelerating, while deaths remain at relatively stable levels. This new demographic dynamic, characterized by an increasingly lower natural increase, is a strong signal to Albanian institutions and society on the need for new supportive policies for the family, fertility and sustainable development of the country.
The region with the largest drop in births during the first quarter of the year is Kukës with 22.9%, while the region with the lowest drop of 4% is Berat. The fact that a drop in births is observed in the first three months of the year in all regions of the country is worrying. Gjirokastra has recorded the lowest number with 76 births in total.
Regarding fatalities, in the first quarter of the current year, the largest increase was recorded in the Shkodra region with 4.3%, while the largest decrease was recorded in Debar with 20.4%.
