Nearly 97.8 males per 100 females/ From year to year, women dominate the gender

According to official INSTAT data regarding the gender ratio in Albania, on January 1, 2025, there were 97.8 men for every 100 women. This indicates an almost balanced ratio, however, there are small changes compared to previous years. In relation to 2024, a minimal decrease is noted from the current year, as then the ratio was 98.1 men per 100 women.

Two years ago, in 2023, population census data showed that there were approximately 1.36 million men and 1.39 million women in Albania. This translates to a ratio of 102 women for every 100 men, meaning there were about 2% more women than men.

If we compare it to the European Union, on January 1, 2023, there were 229 million women and 219 million men in the EU. This corresponds to a ratio of 104.6 women per 100 men, meaning that there were 4.6% more women than men.

In a comparative view with the European Union, in 2003 the gender gap was more pronounced, with 5.4% more women than men.

As for Albania, EUROSTAT data for 2003 show an almost balanced ratio, with 100.5 women for every 100 men. Over the last two decades, Albania ranks among the European countries with the highest increase in the gender ratio in favor of women.

What has been observed over the years is that, although at stable rates, the ratio of men to women in our country is decreasing from year to year. This may be due to several factors, such as the decrease in fertility and male emigration.
