Durres dominates goods, Saranda passengers/ Albanian ports recorded growth in

The Port of Durres continues to hold the main weight of maritime transport in Albania, processing almost the entire volume of goods circulating through the country's ports. Data published by INSTAT for the second quarter of 2026 show that activity in Albanian ports has continued to increase, both for the transport of goods and for the movement of ships.

According to statistics, during the period April-June 2026, about 2.267 million tons of goods were transported through the Port of Durres, or 94.2% of the entire volume of goods transported by sea in Albania. Compared to the same period a year ago, the volume of goods in this port has increased by 9.9%.

In terms of types of goods, the largest share is occupied by base metals and metal products, which account for 15.8% of the total transported goods. This is followed by coke and refined petroleum products with 14.3%, non-metallic mineral products with 13.5%, and coal, crude oil and natural gas, which represent 8.6% of the total volume.

Maritime traffic also increased. During the second quarter, 294 incoming and outgoing ships were registered at the country's ports, of which 276 were foreign ships and 18 domestic ships. Compared to the same period in 2025, the total number of ships increased by 6.5%, while foreign ship movements increased by 9.1%, reflecting the expansion of commercial and maritime activity.

Passenger transport performance is also positive. During the second quarter of the year, 336,103 passengers traveled through Albanian ports. The Port of Saranda was the busiest, handling 60.6% of all passengers, followed by the Port of Durrës with 34.9% and the Port of Vlora with 4.5%. This is also related to the tourist season, which significantly increases movements towards ports, especially in the south of the country.

Maritime trade in goods has also continued to remain at high levels. According to INSTAT, during the second quarter of 2026, 1,555 million tons of goods were transported for export and import, marking an increase of 1.2% compared to the same period last year. Of this volume, 34.7% belongs to exports, while 66.3% to imports, which shows that maritime transport continues to remain the main route for supplying the Albanian economy with goods and for the development of international trade.
