Europe faces the risk of fires next week/ EU: The threat is shifting eastward, Italy and Greece at risk
Greece, Italy and central Europe are expected to face an increased risk of wildfires in the coming weeks, threatening to worsen the situation. Currently, flames continue to burn significant areas in Spain and France, the head of the European Union's emergency response center said. Maria Zuber, head of the EU's Emergency Response Coordination Center, said the ongoing heatwave meant the coming days would be "very difficult" in France, but other countries should also prepare for possible disasters.
"The risk is now shifting to Greece and also to Central Europe," Zuber told reporters. "Greece was spared during the first heat wave, but now the risk is present. Italy will also face high risk in early August, while we will have to wait and see what happens with the Iberian Peninsula," she said.
This forecast reflects weather conditions that help fires ignite and spread quickly, such as high temperatures, dry air, wind, and lack of rain. Climate change is intensifying hot, dry weather conditions, which help fires spread faster and last longer.
Last year, Europe experienced its worst fire season on record, with more than 1 million hectares of land engulfed in flames. Zuber said the fire situation in Europe this year, so far, is similar to that of 2025.
The EU hub coordinates the deployment of aircraft and firefighters to countries requiring emergency support, drawing on resources pooled by European countries and leased by the EU. The hub has sent seven aircraft and four helicopters to France, and six aircraft and three ground crews to fight forest fires in Spain.
Not all EU fleet aircraft are currently engaged and some are on standby in Eastern and Central Europe, as the risk in this part of the continent increases, Zuber said.
