Southern Europe engulfed in flames/Critical situation in Greece and Turkey. Firefighting continues in Spain and France
While emergency teams in France and Spain continue to try to control forest fires, new outbreaks of fire have been recorded in Turkey and Greece. In the southern Turkish province of Antalya, firefighters have been battling several blazes in a tourist area since Tuesday. Several houses were destroyed by the flames.
The governor of Antalya said the fires were caused by extreme temperatures, strong winds and dry air. He said he expected these weather conditions to continue in the coming days. Around 3,000 emergency workers and firefighters are engaged in the fight against the flames.
New large fires have also broken out in coastal areas of Greece and on several islands. As a result, thousands of tourists and residents were forced to flee. During an operation to extinguish a forest fire in Crete, two firefighters lost their lives. The fire front in Crete is said to extend for a length of about 15 kilometers.
There are also reports of fires on the islands of Paros and Lesbos, while winds of up to 74 kilometers per hour are further aggravating the situation. The Greek Ministry of Civil Protection and Disaster Management announced on Thursday the highest level of alert for the risk of fires in several regions of the country, including Crete, the Athens metropolitan area, the eastern Peloponnese and most of the Aegean islands.
Meanwhile, efforts to extinguish the fires continue in France and Spain. New fires have been recorded in several regions of France. In the Var department, in southern France, where large fires had previously broken out, a new fire spread in the area of the small town of Brignoles, local authorities announced on Wednesday evening. About 100 hectares of land were engulfed by flames, while more than 600 people were evacuated. There is hope in Bordeaux, where the largest fires of the season broke out, 42,000 hectares. The fire brigade has managed to stop the fires from spreading further.
In Spain, which is also battling numerous forest fires, a large fire broke out in a national park near the border with Portugal. Due to the high risk to residents, twelve villages and towns around the municipality of Fermoselle were evacuated, the regional government of Castile and Leon announced. Movement restrictions were imposed on two other settlements. According to media reports, about 950 people were moved to safe areas in the affected region in northwestern Spain.
