22 billion USD for the reconstruction of Washington airport / The project, among the largest. It will be financed through municipal bonds
President Donald Trump unveiled a $22 billion plan to rebuild Washington Dulles Airport, replacing the runways and adding a massive parking garage while preserving the historic main terminal. The announcement is the latest in a series of major projects Trump has announced for the capital and surrounding areas. “It’s considered one of the worst airports in the world, we’re going to make it probably the best with a little work,” Trump said, arguing that it was time for “a major renovation and rebuilding.”
Trump, joined by United Airlines CEO Scott Kirby and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, has been pushing for a major overhaul of the airport, which serves as the main international gateway for the U.S. capital region. The plan calls for the construction or renovation of about 5 million square feet of airport space. In May, Duffy confirmed that the federal government was planning a $22 billion investment in the renovation of Washington’s airport.
One of the largest airport renovation projects in the U.S. will be financed through municipal bonds, but there are questions about what impact it will have on airfares. The airport authority had previously approved a separate $7 billion capital investment plan.
Despite the criticism, Dulles was the fastest-growing major U.S. airport last year in passenger traffic. The airport had a record year in 2025, handling 29 million passengers, a 6.4 percent increase. This fall, it will open a new 430,000-square-foot, 14-gate terminal for United Airlines customers. Dulles is about 25 miles from the U.S. capital and first opened in 1962. Trump said United Airlines would partially fund the project, but the airline did not immediately respond to a question about funding.
