Summer is over, but the "coast" is in crisis for employees - AKPA: In the first days of September, over 20 requests for service staff

Even though the tourist season has entered its final weeks and tourist flows have begun to decline significantly, bars and restaurants in coastal areas continue to face a severe shortage of service staff. The demand for employees remains high, especially for positions such as waiters and bartenders.
According to the latest data from the National Employment and Skills Agency, in the first days of September alone, over 21 job vacancies were registered in Durrës and Vlora, two of the most frequented coastal destinations. This shows a significant gap between demand and supply for seasonal workers in the service sector.
However, beyond the need for staff, one of the biggest challenges that continues to weigh on this sector is informality. Lack of contracts, partial declaration of salaries and avoidance of tax obligations are some of the most widespread phenomena, especially during the summer season when the workload is higher and control is more difficult.
In an effort to curb this practice, the General Directorate of Taxes, at the beginning of the tourist season, has determined the minimum reference salaries for the main professions related to tourism and service. According to this instruction, any entity that employs staff such as waiters, bartenders, cooks, managers, sanitation workers or parking guards, must rely on the indicative salaries published by the Taxes.
Thus, the lowest reference salary is 55,000 lek for a parking attendant, while for waiters it ranges from 70,000 to 80,000 lek per month. Sanitarium workers, simple workers and dishwashers are expected to be paid at least 60,000 lek, while for managers the figure increases to 90,000 to 110,000 lek. The highest paid are chefs and head chefs, with salaries that go up to 140,000 lek.
Taxes warn that any taxpayer who declares salaries below these levels for the above or similar professions will be considered at risk and will be subject to in-depth verifications.
