Trump calls on EU - Urges bloc to impose 100% tariffs on China and India

US President Donald Trump has asked the European Union to impose tariffs of up to 100% on China and India over their oil purchases from Russia, a move aimed at increasing pressure on Moscow to end the war in Ukraine.
Trump made the request during a meeting with senior US and European officials in Washington. According to reports, Washington is also willing to "mirror" any tariffs that Europe may impose on the two countries.
The US has already imposed a punitive tariff of 25% on Indian imports over New Delhi's purchases of Russian oil, bringing the total customs duty to 50%. India has called the tariffs "unfair, unjustified and unreasonable", while stressing that both the US and the EU continue to trade with Russia.
According to data from the European Commission, the EU's bilateral trade with Russia was 67.5 billion euros in 2024, while trade in services for 2023 reached 17.2 billion euros.
On the other hand, data from the Indian embassy in Moscow shows that bilateral trade between India and Russia has reached a record $68.7 billion for the year ending March 2025, nearly 5.8 times more than pre-pandemic levels.
China, the largest buyer of Russian oil, has so far escaped the "secondary" tariffs, having reached an agreement with the US to reduce new duties on Chinese products to 30%.
Trump's proposal comes after his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska last month failed to produce significant progress on a ceasefire in Ukraine. After the meeting, Putin told reporters during a joint press conference with Trump that the "root causes" of the conflict must be addressed to achieve a lasting peace.
While Washington's efforts to broker a peace deal have failed, Putin appears to have strengthened ties with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during their meeting at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit in Beijing last week.
