Vengu and Hoxha at the Elbasan landfill: Stabilization of the situation after a week of intense fire fighting!
The Minister of Defense, Pirro Vengu, together with the Minister of Interior, Ervin Hoxha, today conducted an inspection of the waste field in Elbasan, following a dangerous fire that swept the area in recent days, fueled by this summer's high temperatures.
Also present at this visit were the Mayor of Elbasan, Gledian Llatja, and the District Prefect, Ilir Bejtja.
During the inspection, Vengu highly appreciated the tireless work of the firefighting structures, local civil emergencies, the Armed Forces and all institutions involved in managing the situation. He emphasized that thanks to the rapid response and coordinated intervention, a major environmental disaster was avoided and the health of the community was protected.
The fire was extinguished thanks to the engagement of firefighting vehicles from Elbasan and neighboring municipalities, as well as the use of technology, including a drone, which assisted in aerial monitoring and identification of active fires.
The Minister of Defense emphasized that such situations highlight the necessity of a complete modernization of the civil emergency system in the country. He proposed the installation of thermal cameras for continuous monitoring in landfills and the stationing of a firefighting vehicle on permanent standby near them.
"A promising development in this regard is the involvement of the defense industry in the domestic production of civil emergency equipment. The state-owned company KAYO is working to produce fire extinguishers and other equipment, with the objective of meeting national needs and strengthening the country's technological independence," the minister declared.
At the end of the inspection, the importance of inter-institutional cooperation and investments in modern technology for timely response to emergencies and ensuring the safety of citizens was reiterated.
A working group has been established for the landfill fire, including foreign experts, which will conduct a full assessment of the situation and suggest further measures to avoid the recurrence of similar cases.
