Velipoja and Ulcinj with new energy connection? ERE: The project foresees the

The Parliament of Montenegro has recently ratified the agreement with Albania for the construction of a new bridge over the Buna River, which will shorten the road from the large beach of Ulcinj to Velipojë. And while work is already expected to begin on this important road infrastructure project, another investment between the two countries seems on the horizon.

Connecting the two tourist cities with an energy line. Referring to the latest report of the Energy Regulatory Authority (ERE), the construction of the 110 kV Kufi - Velipojë line is part of a new line that is designed to be built and that will connect the Ulcinj substations with the new Velipoja substation. The 110 kV line to be built will be approximately 27 km long and includes the segment from the border to the Velipoja substation, to continue with the installation of the second circuit to the Bushati substation.

According to the ERE, this segment is part of the new Ulcinj-Velipoje 110 kV line, which will continue further on the existing Velipojë-Bushat line, where the connection of this line will also be realized. The Regulatory Entity assesses that the part of the line from the Velipojë substation to Bushat, which lies in the Albanian territory, is a segment built with piling for the 110 kV network, which creates the practical possibility for its use and specifically enables, in this case, to put into operation the second circuit with all the relevant elements for the 110 kV voltage level from Velipoje to the Bushat substation.

"For the above, this intervention is considered a collaboration between two operators from both countries, Albania and Montenegro, for the construction of this line, with a proportional commitment," the ERE report underlines.

The areas of Ulcinj and Velipoja have great tourist potential and the provision of energy infrastructure would guarantee the preservation and further development of tourism in these areas. Also, this intervention will encourage new investments in the hotel sector and tourism infrastructure, increasing the number of small and medium-sized businesses, and thus revitalizing the local economy, especially in terms of increasing agricultural and livestock production, etc.

According to the Regulatory Entity, the implementation of this line will bring, among other things, the fulfillment of the static safety condition for the n–1 criterion for Ulcinj in this phase, and in a second phase, with the expansion of the Velipoja substation, the inclusion of this substation in the ring.
