"Set an industrial exchange rate" - ProEksport Association: Recognize

Exporting businesses have been the ones that have suffered the most losses from exchange rate fluctuations in recent years, as they have contracts that are mainly in euros and a contract for the same value in euros, but converted into lek, is worth less.

In a meeting held today, the Chairman of the ProExport Association, Edvin Prençe, proposed the idea of an industrial exchange rate.

"The industrial exchange rate is nothing more than recognition of the economic damage resulting from exchange rate fluctuations. Costs that have been borne by businesses to date and as such there should be a technical table on how to manage this burden that has been the business's to date. It is a sector that has 650 active businesses with 65 thousand employees, we used to have 750 businesses, but some are closed and this translates into job losses," said Prençe.

He emphasized that businesses are also investing in the realization of the circular economy.

"Albania 2030 has a very high cost and is estimated at 7 billion euros to make it possible for businesses to be similar to European businesses. Investing in technology and training people are points that we are also in discussions with the government. Diversification or changing the mentality of doing business or the mentality of producing in Albania, which should have in mind increasing quality and reducing costs through automation. Our sector produces 40 thousand tons of waste per year, we are working to realize the circular economy to make it possible for this waste to be recycled so that we are special in relation to other countries."

In April, exports of goods reached the value of 33 billion lek, decreasing by 4.1% compared to the same period a year earlier and by 5% compared to March 2025. Imports of goods reached the value of 76 billion lek, increasing by 0.4% compared to a year earlier and by 2.5% compared to March 2025.
