Revolution in the field of construction? - New brick can manage industry waste

A brick made entirely from recycled rubble could help solve one of the construction industry's biggest environmental challenges: how to manage its considerable waste. Unlike traditional clay bricks, K-BRIQ, manufactured by Kenoteq in Edinburgh, Scotland, produces 95% fewer carbon emissions.

"The construction industry is currently a very large contributor to global carbon emissions. But K-BRIQ can really help reduce the embodied carbon associated with new projects ," said Dr. Sam Chapman, co-founder and CEO of Kenoteq.

Embodied carbon can account for over 50% of a building's total carbon footprint, but has received less attention than operational carbon in industry regulations and practices.

"Traditional building materials are extracted from our Earth's limited resources. They also have a very high carbon content. But, by using recycled materials and a very low carbon and energy production process, which does not involve combustion, we have a unique product, but which technically functions like a traditional building brick ," said Lucy Black, head of business development at Kenoteq.

In a standard two-bedroom UK home requiring 12,000 bricks, switching to K-BRIQ would reduce carbon emissions from 5.46 tonnes to 0.2 tonnes CO2e – roughly the equivalent of taking one petrol car off the road for an entire year.

The company says that construction, demolition and excavation waste makes up around 60-65% of total waste in the UK, specifically including 50-60 million tonnes of construction and demolition waste. To address this, Kenoteq says they can create recycled bricks suitable for use within 24 hours of the processed waste arriving at its ultra-low energy factory.

Kenoteq says that, currently, K-BRIQ is a premium product with a price comparable to recycled and specialty bricks. But they expect the price to drop as volumes increase.

Kenoteq’s East Lothian factory is now ramping up production to two million bricks per year, with the capacity to double production to four million as demand increases. K-BRIQ is now certified for use in the US and UK and is currently undergoing EU approval.
