In recent years, the Albanian economy has experienced a significant increase in total credit, reflecting sustainable development and increased confidence in the financial sector. According to the latest data from the “Bank of Albania”, total credit reached 871.9 billion lek in April 2025, with a significant increase of 13.1% compared to April last year, and an increase of 0.6% compared to March of the same year.

So, if we talk in absolute figures, it turns out that in the span of one month, credit has increased by 5.5 billion lek, while in the span of one year it records an increase of 100.9 billion lek.

In annual terms, this increase is mainly attributed to the expansion of business lending. From 432 billion lek in April last year, it has increased by about 53.6 billion lek in April this year, reaching about 485.7 billion lek. The growth over one year is estimated at 12.4%.

This growth was mainly supported by an increase in foreign currency loans, which reached 262.4 billion lek, from 222.7 billion lek. In one year, foreign currency loans increased by 17.8%, while loans in lek increased by 6.7%.

If we refer to the one-month period, business loans have decreased by 0.6%, led by a 0.9% decrease in foreign currency loans, compared to March of the same year.

The growth in lending in April is a good sign for the economy and the banking system. It indicates an active, liquid financial system that supports economic growth. But this growth must be accompanied by caution and sustainable policies, to avoid debt overload and to preserve loan quality.
