Need help with the housework? - This robot uses artificial intelligence to clean everything!
For those who don't like cleaning or tidying up their homes, help may now come from artificial intelligence. Robotics researchers at Stanford University are developing a rotating robotic arm that uses artificial intelligence, including large-scale language models called LLMs and vision models, to learn and perform personalized household tasks like doing laundry, wiping down counters, and organizing objects. They're calling their robot Tidybot.
Tidybot uses an LLM, similar to the technology that powers ChatGPT, to process large sets of online data, enabling it to recognize and categorize objects such as clothes, toys, and food. By combining this AI with a vision model, Tidybot identifies object qualities such as color and shape, allowing it to sort light and dark clothes or place a teddy bear on a shelf after being given just a few instructions.
The researchers demonstrated Tidybot at a recent event marking the 100th anniversary of the Stanford School of Engineering. With just a smartphone, they were able to control the robot's hand, opening and closing its grips to move objects. The smartphone was equipped with sensors that could be used to translate the position and orientation of the controller's hand into the robot's hand.
Tidybot then uses a machine learning algorithm to learn and store these tasks for future use. It can even open drawers, wash dishes, wipe counters and furniture, and clean every room in the house.
The researchers hope that Tidybot will be fully autonomous in the future. They also envision adding a second arm and even having a fleet of Tidybots working together to keep the house clean.
