Energy losses fell by 1.1% - The improvement in the indicator came from the transmission system, increasing distribution
Electricity losses in the network decreased during the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period a year earlier. According to data from the Institute of Statistics, losses reached 478 gWh in the period January-March, from 483 gWh in the first quarter of 2024, marking a decrease of 1.1%.
According to INSTAT, the share of network losses in total available electricity during the first quarter of 2025 is 21.1% from 22% in the first quarter of 2024, marking a decrease of 0.9%.
The impact on the decrease in energy losses has been given by the transmission network, as for the distribution network in the first quarter of this year, the figures result in an increase. Losses in the distribution network are divided into technical and non-technical losses, while according to data from INSTAT, the impact on their increase was given by technical losses resulting from the depreciated network. This is because non-technical losses, which include energy theft, decreased.
More specifically, during the period January - March 2025, 312,071 mWh of energy results in technical losses, while 114,657 mWh, non-technical.
In fact, the Distribution System Operator has announced that it has undertaken numerous checks for electricity abuses at various entities in the country.
These inspections are carried out within the framework of law enforcement and the fight against informality, while based on risk analyses, the focus is on entities that present a possibility of electricity abuse. After the inspections, entities where theft is found are processed by the police for violations of the energy law.
