Volcanic soil that replaces water - The solution for Jordan, which is the second country in the world for water shortage
In Jordan's Mafraq region, located north of the capital Amman, workers and machines processed volcanic rocks, crushing them into sand, a key material used in the production of volcanic soil that helps combat water shortages and desertification.
Mining engineer Ibrahim al-Manaseer said the minerals extracted from these rocks vary from place to place. "There's zeolite, like the one we have in the mine here. There's zeolite tuff in one of the other mines we have. There's basalt and pozzolans. They're all volcanic rocks that formed thousands of years ago," he said.
Volcanic rocks are found mainly in northern Jordan, according to the Jordanian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources website.
Derived from these rocks, volcanic soil has been introduced as an organic alternative to traditional soils by the Jordanian group Watad, founded in 2019.
Its chief executive Mohannad al-Manaseer said that volcanic soil is the ideal solution to the water problem and has the advantage of being resistant to weeds. While agricultural engineer Hadeel, stressed that this soil reduces water consumption by 60% and fertilizer use by 80%.
Al-Manaseer also said that the group produces one million tons of volcanic soil per year, but "has the potential to increase that to tens of millions due to the high reserve in the mines and production capacity."
"Our ambition today is that in all global markets this product will be an alternative to today's fertilizers, which are all temporary and non-sustainable products," he said.
According to UNICEF, Jordan ranks as the second most water-scarce country in the world, with annual renewable water resources amounting to less than 100 cubic meters per person, well below the water scarcity threshold of 500 cubic meters per person.
