The labor market favors men/ Gender gap in the country, high difference between

In 2024, Albania ranks among the countries with the deepest gender gap in employment in Europe. According to Eurostat data, the difference between the employment rate of men and women in our country reaches 12.6 percentage points, while the European Union average is 9.2 percentage points.

This indicator, known as the "gender employment gap", measures the difference between the employment rate of men and women aged 15–64. In Albania, for 2024, the employment rate for women is 62.4%, while for men it is 75%. For comparison, the EU average is 66.2% for women and 75.4% for men.

Despite improvements in recent years, Albania still ranks seventh from the bottom in Europe for female employment rates. Countries like Serbia, Romania, Greece, Italy, and Turkey are worse off.

Among the countries with the deepest gender inequalities in employment, Turkey leads with 36.3 percentage points and Italy with 17.8 percentage points. At the other end of the spectrum, Finland, Estonia and Lithuania have the best indicators, with minimal differences of 0.4 to 1.2 percentage points.

Gender inequality in employment is linked to various factors such as discrimination in the labor market, low participation of women in decision-making, as well as the burden of childcare and unpaid family work. These barriers continue to significantly affect women's access to and persistence in the labor market. This pronounced gender gap in Albania raises serious questions about active labor market policies and the effectiveness of gender equality measures.
