EU food safety standards, discussion with milk producers and processors

Standardizing production and strengthening food safety in the dairy sector remain key steps for meeting European Union criteria and increasing the competitiveness of Albanian products in the European market.

This was the main message of the roundtable organized by the National Economic Council, where representatives of the National Food Authority, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and representatives of the dairy industry discussed the challenges and measures for the approximation of Albanian standards with EU legislation.

At this meeting, AKU Director General Blerina Gjylameti reconfirmed the institution's role as a guarantor of food safety standards and not just as an enforcer of the law, emphasizing the importance of changing mentality and close cooperation with business.

According to NFA representatives, food security remains one of the most challenging chapters in the European Union integration process.

In this context, the implementation of legislation related to aflatoxin control, the use of antibiotics and ensuring milk traceability is an important priority to increase the competitiveness of Albanian products in the European market.

During the discussions, the importance of cooperation between institutions and food business operators, including milk processing plants, dairies and farmers, was emphasized to improve production standards and guarantee safe products for consumers.

The AKU called on food business operators to identify problems and increase transparency in their activities, emphasizing that institutions will provide legal support to businesses that respect standards, while there will be zero tolerance for violators when consumer health is compromised.

The main goal remains to strengthen the food safety chain from farm to fork, in line with European Union standards.

The National Food Authority also invited citizens and entities to contact the email address [email protected] or the Toll-Free Number 0800 7575 for any uncertainties or problems.
