Albanians, "thirsty" for the internet/ AKEP: Average monthly consumption increased by 3%. They are using fewer minutes and SMS
Albanians are using more internet, but fewer minutes and SMS messages. Newly published market data from the Electronic and Postal Communications Authority (AKEP) shows that Albanian citizens consumed an average of 134 outgoing minutes, 12 SMS and 9.21 GB of internet per month during the period January-March 2025.
Comparing these values with those of the last quarter of 2024, it is found that the average monthly consumption of outgoing minutes decreased by 7.6%, the average consumption of SMS decreased by 7.7% and that of the internet increased by 3%.
Unlike the internet, minutes are often insufficient to communicate for a long time. Also, a greater consumption of the internet comes due to the higher use of social networks, which often consume large amounts of internet.
On the other hand, there are even fewer SIM cards in circulation in Albania. According to AKEP statistics, around 3.2 million were the number of SIM cards in the first three months of this year, around 4.2% less than in the previous quarter. The number of individuals who actively use mobile telephony reached approximately 2.4 million, a figure that represents a decrease of 2.2% compared to the last period of 2024.
How many minutes, internet and SMS have all Albanians spent in total?
Regarding the total number of minutes, SMS and internet spent by all citizens, it is estimated that it has decreased significantly compared to the previous period. Around 974 million minutes was the total of outgoing calls generated by mobile subscribers in Albania in the first quarter of 2025, thus marking a decrease of 9.3% compared to the previous period.
The number of SMS messages sent by mobile network subscribers was nearly 88 million, while the amount of internet traffic on cellular networks reached about 55 million GigaBytes.
