Albanians spend 9.84 GB of internet per month/ AKEP: SMS messages, increasingly shrinking. Calls "recover"

In Albania, the way citizens use mobile telephony is changing rapidly. The latest data from the Electronic and Postal Communications Authority for the second quarter of 2025 shows that the use of SMS messages is declining, while internet and call traffic is increasing significantly.
During the months of April-June, about 1 billion minutes of outgoing calls were made from mobile networks, a significant increase compared to previous periods. Meanwhile, the number of SMS messages sent has decreased significantly compared to April-June last year, dropping to 98 million messages.
In contrast, internet traffic on mobile networks has been steadily increasing. Total consumption has reached around 62 million gigabytes, while the average monthly usage per subscriber has reached 9.84 GB. The growth is mainly related to the intensive use of communication applications and social networks, which require more and more internet.
Meanwhile, the SIM card market is also shrinking. At the end of the second quarter, there were around 3.27 million SIM cards in circulation in Albania, while the number of active users was 2.42 million. Both indicators have decreased compared to the previous year, reflecting a consolidation of usage and a shift towards a more centralized communication model.
This transformation is closely linked to technological development and changing consumer habits, who today prefer communication via the internet over traditional calls or text messages.
In this context, mobile operators are expected to focus increasingly on improving internet quality and offering packages tailored to users' digital needs.
