Albanians, more medicines and vitamins! - Nutritionist: The reason is the aging population and increased health care
The aging of the population, confirmed by the latest Census, as well as the growing fear of increasing diseases, are increasingly turning citizens' attention to health.
According to the Institute of Statistics, 28.2 billion lek of pharmaceutical products were imported last year, an increase of 1.2 billion lek compared to 2023. This figure approached the highest level recorded during the Covid-19 pandemic.
A significant portion of these imports is related to supplements and vitamins, which are often taken without a prescription by citizens in order to strengthen immunity.
According to INSTAT, last month, imports of pharmaceutical products by weight reached 6,480 tons. Compared to 2020, when medicines, vitamins and supplements were essential due to the pandemic, imports increased by 374 tons.
