Negotiations with the EU begin for 8 new areas - Dhuka: Positive signals, progress in 6 months for 27 chapters together
Albania is ready to open negotiations with the EU on 8 new chapters that touch on several important areas of the economy. The Committee on European Affairs reviewed today the draft negotiating position for the third group of chapters: “Competitiveness and inclusive growth”, for negotiations for membership in the European Union.
Majlinda Dhuka, Minister of State and Chief Negotiator for EU Integration:
"We are taking an important step on the European path. We are discussing the opening of negotiations for 8 new areas of competitiveness and inclusive growth after the EU recognized Albania's progress with reforms in this area, signaling that Albania is prepared to open negotiations in these groups of chapters. Today we are discussing 8 chapters of inclusive growth and in these 6 months Albania is progressing to open negotiations for 27 chapters together. We have held 32 discussion tables for these 8 chapters.
Jorida Tabaku, Chairwoman of the Committee on European Affairs:
"The integration process requires not only papers but also implementation, and it seems to me that we have regressed in some areas."
The 8 chapters included in the third grouping are Information Society and Media; Social Policies and Employment; Education and Culture, Enterprise and Industrial Policies, Customs, Taxation, Monetary Policy, Education and Science.
