Albanians "fill" Italy's demographic gaps - 417 thousand

Around 417 thousand Albanian citizens live and work in Italy, according to the results of the census published a year ago.

A figure that represents only those who are equipped with a regular residence permit, thus excluding a significant portion of Albanians who have already become Italian citizens or those who continue to reside irregularly, outside the official system.

Throughout Italy, from north to south, Albanians constitute one of the largest foreign communities. In many provinces such as Lombardy, Piedmont, Tuscany and Calabria, Albania ranks among the three main countries of origin of immigrants, alongside Romania, Morocco and Egypt, balancing the demographic changes of Italy, especially in those areas where birth rates are falling and mortality rates are rising.

Lombardy, as the most populous and industrialized region of Italy, is also home to the largest number of Albanians. Around 84,000 people are registered as residents.

However, the influence of the Albanian community is also visible in other regions such as Emilia Romagna and Tuscany, where over 100 thousand Albanians live and work in total.

On the other hand, in the less populated regions of Valle d'Aosta and Molise, the number of Albanians does not exceed 1,300 individuals.
