Albania, on the seismic "red map"? - The probability of being affected

The Balkan region appears to be more vulnerable than ever to earthquakes, according to the findings of a group of experts and educators specializing in the seismic risk and construction sectors. For this reason, they have set in motion a drive to strengthen the culture of prevention and risk management.

"In the case of Albania, I want to emphasize that out of 60 reported earthquakes, only half have occurred in the last few centuries. This fact shows that the number of strong historical earthquakes that could affect Albania has probably been underestimated," said Neritan Shkodrani.

According to discussions at the "Seismic Risk and Its Reduction" forum, experts highlighted that the cities most at risk from earthquakes are Tirana, Durrës, Vlora and Elbasan, significantly increasing the overall seismic risk coefficient for the country.

"The probability of an earthquake occurring, based on the country's seismic history, is medium to high. For this reason, the entire legal framework for civil protection begins with the assessment of disaster risk," emphasized Etleva Bajrami.

During the event, the importance of new construction in Albania being built in compliance with earthquake resistance standards was emphasized.

Japan was cited as an example, a country frequently affected by powerful earthquakes, but which, thanks to its safe structures, rarely faces major material damage.
