Last month was the second hottest May on record worldwide, European scientists have found. Does this give you a sense of déjà vu? Maybe because it is.

The same scientists found that this April was also the second warmest globally since records began. It followed the warmest March ever recorded.

May 2025 was 1.4 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial average levels, according to the monthly update from climate monitoring agency Copernicus.

The good news is that this "breaks a long sequence of months with temperatures above 1.5C above pre-industrial levels," one of the scientists said. But, he said, "while this may offer a brief respite for the planet, the 1.5C threshold is expected to be exceeded again in the near future, due to continued warming of the climate system."

The organization also stated that Northwest Europe experienced an "exceptionally dry spring." The report noted that parts of the region recorded "the lowest levels of precipitation and soil moisture since 1979." This phenomenon led to "the lowest spring river flows across Europe since records began in 1992."

Rising global temperatures are largely the result of the continued burning of fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas. But under the Paris climate agreement adopted in 2015, countries pledged to limit global warming to well below 2C and ideally below 1.5C, compared to pre-industrial levels.

The European Union itself also agreed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions under the Green Deal and achieve climate neutrality by mid-century.
