US proposes extension of tariff pause - Deadline change may come for countries

United States Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent signaled the Trump administration's willingness to extend the current 90-day tariff pause beyond July 9 for major trading partners.

The US has 18 "significant trading partners," Bessent said at a hearing in Washington. According to him, the Trump administration is "working to reach agreements" with those countries.

"It is very likely that for those countries and trading blocs, like the European Union, that are negotiating in good faith, the US will "push back the date to continue negotiations. If someone is not negotiating, then neither will we," Bessent said.

Until now, Trump administration officials had not expressed a willingness to move the 90-day tariff suspension without reaching at least “the terms of an agreement” before the deadline. Bessent’s comments suggest the administration may be more willing to change the self-imposed deadline as the moment approaches.

President Donald Trump's 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs, announced on April 9, will end in less than a month.

Trump officials have repeatedly said they are close to signing trade deals with many countries. But so far, the White House has only announced a formal trade agreement with the United Kingdom and a framework agreement with China.

The US-China pact was announced on Wednesday, but the full details are still unclear.
