India, plane with 242 passengers crashes during takeoff - The aircraft collides with residential buildings near the airport
An Air India plane bound for London's Gatwick Airport crashed during takeoff at Ahmedabad airport. According to reports, the plane was carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew members. Of these, 169 are Indian nationals, 53 are British, 1 is a Canadian national and 7 are Portuguese.
Sources from India's Aviation Ministry expressed shock after the aircraft crashed in the Indian state of Gujarat.
"We are on high alert. We are monitoring the situation and have instructed all aviation and emergency response agencies to take swift action. Rescue teams have been mobilized and all efforts are being made to ensure that medical assistance is rushed to the scene," they said.
Online flight tracking sites show the plane is a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.
"We are following reports of a crash of an Air India flight from Ahmedabad to London. We received the last signal from the aircraft just seconds after takeoff," Flight Radar wrote in a post on X.
Footage on social media shows a low-flying plane descending towards a residential area before bursting into flames. Another image appears to show the plane's tail on the roof of a residential building after the crash.
