The risks of cyber attacks against Albania - AKSK prepares a new methodology that assesses them by sectors
The National Cyber Security Authority (NKSA) has prepared a new methodology that will identify cyber risks by sector and the likelihood of cyber attacks occurring.
The Authority will conduct individual cybersecurity risk assessments for operators providing critical and important services such as OSHEE, KESH, the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, OST, banks and microfinance institutions, insurance companies, the General Directorate of Taxes, Albcontrol, the Ministry of Defense, the Durrës Port Authority, the Social Security Institute and others.
Also, the National Cybersecurity Authority will conduct cybersecurity risk assessments according to critical sectors, such as energy, health, finance, government, transport and infrastructure, and will then conduct a national cybersecurity risk assessment.
Critical information infrastructure includes the entirety of information networks and systems, owned by a public or private authority, that provide services, the disruption or destruction of which would have a serious impact on the health, safety, economic well-being of citizens and the effective functioning of the economy in Albania.
AKSK will build a risk register of cyber attacks against these operators. This risk will be measured in terms of the likelihood of occurrence and impact by sector. The impact can be financial, social, legal and reputational.
To determine the likelihood of a cyberattack occurring, the National Cybersecurity Authority assesses the institution's information system architecture and environment, access to systems, cyber resilience, the strength and nature of the threat, vulnerabilities and effectiveness of existing and other controls.
Albania has faced many cyber attacks in recent years. The digitalization of services has brought many conveniences to citizens, but on the other hand, it has increased the possibility of cyber attacks.
