Albania versus the region How much does living cost compared to its neighbors?

The cost of living includes a number of important items in the monthly basket of every citizen, starting from food and transportation, to taxes, clothing and entertainment. “Scan Intel” has analyzed some of these main items, comparing them with countries in the region to better understand where Albania is positioned. According to data and indices published by Visual Capitalist, prices in the region for 2026 show significant fluctuations.

If we examine public transport, it turns out that the highest cost in the region belongs to Montenegro, with an average price of around 30 euros. Albania ranks fourth, with a more moderate cost compared to some other countries in the region. Meanwhile, citizens of Kosovo pay less for this service, while in Serbia, specifically in Belgrade, public transport is offered for free.

When it comes to food prices, the situation is different. Albania results in higher costs for some basic consumer products, ranking it among the most expensive countries in this category. Montenegro is again very close, while Kosovo and North Macedonia offer lower prices for almost all basic foods.

Another important element in the citizens' budget is the ratio between taxes and wages. According to the analyzed index, Albania ranks relatively better in this indicator, having a more favorable ratio compared to some other countries in the region. Montenegro is presented with the highest level of taxes in relation to wages, followed by Serbia and Bosnia & Herzegovina. Albania remains among the countries with the most moderate fiscal burden in this comparison.

In the clothing and entertainment category, the picture is different. Serbia results in the highest prices for clothing, followed by Albania and Montenegro with almost similar costs. Meanwhile, Kosovo and North Macedonia offer more economical alternatives.

When it comes to entertainment, the highest costs are recorded in Tirana, ranking the Albanian capital among the most expensive in the region for this category. It is followed by Montenegro and Serbia.

Overall, the comparison shows that Albania is positioned average in the region for some important items of living, while for others it presents higher costs, reflecting a price structure that varies by sector.
