Albania with its "eyes" on foreign markets - Businesses find it easier to buy than to sell abroad
Albanians are increasingly finding it more profitable to open a business that imports goods from abroad to sell in the domestic market, rather than trying to bring "Made in Albania" products to foreign markets. According to data published by the Institute of Statistics, in 2024 the number of importing companies reached 14,734, marking an increase of nearly 8% compared to 2023.
In contrast, exporting enterprises have recorded a slight decline. Last year, the number of businesses exporting Albanian goods was 3,784, down 0.2% compared to the previous year, a difference of 8 fewer enterprises. Although this may seem like a modest decline, the trend indicates a slowdown in interest in penetrating international markets.
According to INSTAT data, exporting enterprises are mainly dominated by the industrial sector, especially the garment and food industry. The latter has seen positive performance thanks to increased fruit and vegetable exports (Graph 2), while the garment sector has encountered difficulties due to the depreciation of the euro, which has negatively affected its competitiveness.
On the other hand, the significant growth of importing companies is mainly related to the trade sector. About 62% of these businesses operate in this field. These are businesses that import clothing, accessories, vehicles and other products, which are then sold through various online platforms that are increasingly appearing in the Albanian market.
